This is a go fund me, and stems from Western Australia founded by Debbie Kilroy as a response to WA refusing to change it’s laws where imprisonment is the result of overdue fines.
The largest demographic of people that wind up in this situation is single Aboriginal mothers who mostly live in poverty and aren’t financially able to pay these fines which results in them being separated from their family and put in prison. All funds donated to the Sisters Inside Bail Fund are used to release these women from prison and pay any outstanding warrants.
Many Indigenous women are subject to violence in custody, as well as being the highest category to fall victim to domestic violence which very regularly results in homelessness.
